   Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
Holmfirth near Huddersfield

At Old Mill Therapies, based in New Mill, Holmfirth, near Huddersfield, I provide specialist Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) tailored to each client's individual clinical needs.

As an Advanced Lymphoedema Practitioner with over 13 years' experience in clinical therapy, I use advanced Fill & Flush techniques informed by fluoroscopic imaging research to support lymphatic function and help manage swelling.

My treatments are particularly suited to clients requiring specialist lymphoedema management, post-surgical lymphatic care and appropriate supportive treatment for lipoedema.

Each appointment begins with consideration of your medical history, current symptoms and individual treatment requirements, ensuring a professional, compassionate and clinically informed approach.

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialist, gentle hands-on therapy designed to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid through the body's lymphatic system.

The lymphatic system plays an essential role in maintaining fluid balance, supporting immune function and transporting excess fluid and proteins away from the body's tissues.

At Old Mill Therapies, I use advanced Fill & Flush MLD techniques, informed by fluoroscopic imaging research, to encourage lymphatic drainage through appropriate pathways.

MLD may form part of a treatment programme for lymphoedema, post-surgical swelling and other clinically appropriate conditions. It can also be incorporated into supportive care for people living with lipoedema.

Each treatment is individually tailored, taking into consideration your medical history, current symptoms, previous surgery and any cancer-related treatment.

How Can Manual Drainage Help?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle, specialist therapy that may help manage swelling, improve comfort and support lymphatic fluid movement. It can be particularly beneficial as part of an individualised treatment programme for certain conditions.

Lymphoedema

MLD may help manage lymphatic swelling caused by impaired lymphatic drainage, including lymphoedema following cancer treatment, surgery or other causes. Treatment may be combined with compression therapy, exercise and self-management advice where appropriate.

Lipoedema

For people living with lipoedema, MLD may help relieve feelings of heaviness, tightness and discomfort, particularly where swelling is also present. Treatment focuses on symptom management rather than reducing the underlying lipoedema tissue.

Post-Surgical Recovery

MLD may assist in managing swelling and discomfort following cosmetic, reconstructive or orthopaedic surgery. Treatment is adapted to the surgical procedure, stage of healing and any instructions provided by the surgeon.

Oncology-Related Lymphatic Care

For clients who have undergone cancer surgery or radiotherapy, specialist lymphatic treatment may help manage associated lymphoedema. Careful assessment and appropriate clinical precautions are essential, particularly during active cancer treatment.

Individualised Clinical Care

Every client receives an assessment to establish whether MLD is appropriate. Where necessary, medical advice or clearance will be sought before treatment begins.

What To Expect During Your MLD Appointment

At Old Mill Therapies, every treatment is tailored to your individual needs, ensuring a professional, compassionate and clinically informed approach.

Initial Consultation and Assessment

Your appointment begins with a discussion of your medical history, current symptoms and treatment goals. Where appropriate, I will assess the distribution of swelling, tissue changes and other relevant clinical findings to establish a suitable treatment plan.

Your MLD Treatment

Using gentle, specialised manual techniques, including advanced Fill & Flush MLD, treatment is designed to encourage lymphatic fluid movement through appropriate drainage pathways.

The treatment is generally relaxing and should not be painful. Techniques are adapted to your condition, comfort and any relevant medical or surgical precautions.

Ongoing Care and Self-Management

Depending on your clinical needs, treatment may also include advice on compression, movement, skin care and self-management techniques.

Where appropriate, additional therapies such as Deep Oscillation Therapy or intermittent pneumatic compression may be incorporated into your treatment programme following assessment.

Your Comfort and Wellbeing

Your comfort, dignity and privacy are always respected. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns throughout your appointment.
